Dragon Brigade Soldiers Set For Deployment

During the next week, hundreds of soldiers from the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat team are set to depart Fort Riley for Afghanistan. In fact, some have already started to deploy. The first ‘Dragon’ Brigade soldiers left Kansas for Afghanistan late last month. The brigade will serve under the Big Red One Headquarters in Regional Command East.

Chamber To Host Open House

Run For The Wall Coming Through Junction City

Approximately 300 riders participating in the cross country Run for the Wall motorcycle ride will stop in Junction City on Sunday.
Organizers report the riders, who are enroute to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D. C. are expected to arrive in Junction City about 4:45 Sunday afternoon.

A 65-year-old Junction City man is still confined in the Riley County Jail after being arrested in connection with an alleged 1980 rape case in Manhattan. Jesse Hammond, who resides at 238 West 14th Street, was originally arrested by Junction City Police on Thursday for an outside warrant and for being a fugitive from justice.

Two Cars Vandalized In Ogden

Riley County Police say approximately $6,000 in damage was done to two vehicles in Ogden Thursday night. The incident of criminal damage to property occurred between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. at 431 Pine Alley in Ogden. The victims were 18-year-old Jordan Wallace, of 431 Pine Alley, and 25-year-old Alexandra Padilla, a Fort Riley resident.

Subway Rebuilding South Washington Location

After a fire forced the restaurant to close in early December, Subway will rebuild and open again in Junction City. The fire in December caused an estimated $100,000 loss to the 1128 South Washington location. Officials later demolished the building.

Fire Damages Junction City House
There were no injuries in a house fire at 732 West 11th Street in Junction City Tuesday night. Fire Department Battalion Chief Craig Paxton reported Sokhann Ou and five other family members got out of the residence safely. He estimated damage at $20,000 to the structure and $5,000 to contents.

There were no injuries in a fire at a Junction City apartment Tuesday. Junction City Fire Department officials say the fire caused approximately $15,000 damage to an apartment in the Green Park complex at 1436 North Calhoun.

In Geary County officials including emergency management director Garry Berges noted the storms were forecast to begin between five and seven p.m. Saturday,and run in a line generally between Belleville on the north to Salina, south toward Wichita.

"F" Company Activated At Fort Riley
Although the F Company, 1st Aviation Regiment was activated to the Combat Aviation Brigade last month, the 128 soldiers in the company were officially activated during a ceremony at Fort Riley’s Marshal Army Airfield on Thursday. The F Company soldiers are learning to fly Gray Eagle, something CAB Commander Col. Mike Morgan calls the most capable unmanned aerial system in the world.

Manhattan Regional Airport director Peter Van Kuren says the Manhattan City Commission was encouraged by the proposed projects at the airport during a work session this week. The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors received an update on the issue involving funding support for the Junction City Arts Council and C.L. Hoover Opera House on Wednesday. A Fort Riley soldier was arrested on Tuesday after an altercation amongst a group of males at O’Malley’s Alley in Manhattan’s Aggieville District. Riley County Police arrested 24-year-old Nicholas Andreason for disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property.

Fire Damages Junction City House
There were no injuries but a fire damaged the home of the Richard and Patricia Mansker family at 310 South Webster in Junction City. That information was provided by Junction City Fire Department Battalion Chief Craig Paxton, who reported the fire was called into authorities at 10:47 a.m. Tuesday.

Florence Whitebread will seek re-election to the Geary County Commission. She will be seeking a sixth term on the commission. Whitebread is currently completing her 20th year as a member of the governing body. An Abilene teenager has died as a result of a one vehicle accident near Chapman.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported Riley O. Knox, 19, of Abilene was the fatality victim in the accident about 2 a.m. Sunday.

Approximately 475 children participated in the annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by VFW 8773 and Acacia Lodge 91 in Junction CIty. They ranged in age from infant to 10. In addition to eggs kids also received tickets that made them eligible in a drawing for prizes.

State-Wide Test Conducted On New Vehicle System
A state-wide test of the new vehicle system to be implemented next month was conducted on Thursday, including in Geary County. The new system, that goes into effect on May 1, will replace the current system that has been in place since 1988 and will connect the law enforcement agencies, driver’s licenses and some financial institutions together.

Authorities Arrest Two On Drug Counts
The Geary County Sheriff’s Department is reporting the arrest of Mikolaj Bykowski of Arvada, Colorado on I-70 on the south side of Junction City on drug related counts. The S-O reports Bykowski was arrested on suspicion of Possession of Marijuana, No Drug Tax Stamp, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Defective Windshield.

Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Lawton Nuss has announced furloughs for judicial branch employees. That will impact district court employees in the Eighth Judicial District that includes Geary, Dickinson, Marion, and Morris counties along with other state courts across Kansas.

Fort Riley officials will implement new gate hours at the 12th Street and Ogden gates for traffic on and off post.. Effective Friday the 12th Street Gate will no longer be open 24 hours per day.

Lady Jay Soccer Team Wins

The Junction City Lady Jay soccer team improved their record to 4-0 with a 3-2 win over Wichita Southeast Monday night in Wichita. Cassidy Meadows scored the winning goal with about 20 minutes to play in the match. Junction City will host Leavenworth Wednesday night and Highland Park Thursday night.

USD 475 Board of Education Approves Hirings

The Geary USD 475 Board of Education has approved a series of hirings for the school district. Melissa Sharp will become the principal at Junction City High School. Sharp, 43, will succeed Stanley Dodds who has resigned following the current school year.

Weber introduced as K-State's new coach
After a short search process, Kansas State University has selected Bruce Weber as the 24th head men's basketball coach in school history.
Weber was introduced during a press conference at Bramlage Coliseum on Saturday.
The 55-year-old Weber agreed to a five-year contract, which was approved by the K-State Athletics, Inc., Board of Directors and University President Kirk Schulz.

Blue Jays Split Two In Baseball

Fort Riley soldiers begin deploying to Afghanistan

The First Infantry Division's Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion began departing Fort Riley for Afghanistan last Thursday. Soldiers' luggage was weighed at each company's area to ensure the planes would not be overweight. The soldiers were then bused to a Fort Riley building where they ensured their carry-on bags fit in the airplane cabins.

Kansas Senate approves legislation to help Junction City's debt

Fort Riley soldier dies in Afghanistan

A Fort Riley soldier has died in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Thirty-year-old Staff Sergeant Jesse Grindey, of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, died on Monday. Grindey was a military policeman assigned to the 287th Military Police Company, 97th Military Police Battalion at Fort Riley.

It was a busy day for the Riley County Police Department on Saturday due to the annual Fake Patty's Day event in Manhattan. From midnight to midnight, RCPD officials responded to 746 calls for service. That was down 1.8 percent from 760 total calls in 2011. However, the number of arrests increased dramatically.

After being closed for more than a year, the Gathering Pond at Milford Lake opened again on Monday. Located below the Milford Lake Dam, the Gathering Pond was closed while Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism officials worked to secure the nearby Milford Fish Hatchery from the possibility of Zebra Mussel invasion.

Accident Claims One Life

An Abilene teenager has died as a result of a one vehicle accident near Chapman.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reports Riley O. Knox, 19 was the fatality victim in the accident about 2 a.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 40 one half mile east of Chapman.
