Redistricting On House Plate

The Kansas House gave first round approval Wednesday to a bill that redraws its members' districts.  The plan eliminates single districts in southeast, southwest, and central Kansas and adds districts in the Kansas City area.

Boil Water Advisory Rescinded

The city of Junction City has rescinded the boil water advisory for water customers on the west side of Spring Valley Road, north of Wildcat Lane, and south of Buddy Drive in the Olivia Farms development. The advisory was rescinded because laboratory testing and evaluation of other factors indicated the water is safe for drinking and other uses.

JCHS Basketball Teams Lose to Hayden

The Hayden WIldcats got 14 points from Colin Strobel in the first half and moved on to defeat the Junction City Blue Jays in boys basketball 72-49 at the Shenk Gym Tuesday night. Junction City hit five three point shots in the first half, but struggled after the break.

No Classes at Junction City Middle School Wednesday

There will be no classes at Junction City Middle School on Wednesday.  It marks the second straight day classes at that school have been cancelled due to a water main break that occurred on Monday.

Boil Water Advisory Issued

The city of Junction City has issued a boil water advisory for water customers on the west side of Spring Valley Road, north of Wildcat Lane and south of Buddy Drive in the Olivia Farms development as the result of a 16 inch water main break. The city issued the advisory due to the loss of pressure in the distribution system for customers in the designated area.

K-State Basketball Teams Split

The Kansas State Wildcat men's basketball team got a career high 19 points from Will SPradling enroute to a 64-53 victory over Texas A & M Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum. The win left the Wildcats in fifth place in the Big 12 standings at 5-5, and 16-6 overall on the season.

A local tradition continues Thursday night at the Lyona United Methodist Church. The 57th annual Groudhog supper served by the men of the church begins at 3:30 p.m. and continues through the evening. It will include 1200 pounds of sausage, honey flavored whole wheat waffles, pankcakes and forty gallons of homemade ice cream.

Due to traffic congestion at Henry Gate on Fort Riley in the early morning hours, there will be traffic control beginning next Tuesday from five a.m. until seven a.m. each weekday morning. That was decided at a meeting between local and Fort Riley officials on Tuesday. Tony Wolf, Geary County undersheriff, said it will be an entrance only during those hours.

A gas line leak forced Riley County police and fire officials to close K-18 Highway for over an hour Tuesday afternoon. All four lanes from Scenic Drive to Stagg Hill Road in Manhattan were closed in the noon hour after a scaper hit the eight-inch line while moving dirt.

Three cases of pertussis confirmed in Riley County

There are three confirmed and two probable cases of whooping cough, or pertussis, in Riley County. Susie Kufahl, director of Riley County Health Department, said the three confirmed cases were young children. The health department was treating as many as eight people with symtoms pertaining to the contagious bacteria infection.

JCHS students honored at academic banquet

There were 315 students from Junction City High School honored for their academic acheivements on Monday in the Shenk Gymnasium. Each student received an academic letter for receiving a 3.5 or higher grade point average last semester. Melanie Hall, a 2001 JCHS graduate and  a 2011 Harry S. Truman scholarship recipient, was the keynote speaker for the event.

A series of tax sales on delinquent property in Geary County will begin in late May, according to Geary County Commission chair Florence Whitebread. Whitebread said there was an initial list of about 1200 properties divided into four groups. The first sale will primarily involve residential properties.

Twenty Arrested In Grandview Plaza

Authorities in Geary County are confirming the arrest of 20 people early Monday morning at Flinthills Boulevard and Cannon View Drive in Grandview Plaza. The arrrests for suspicion of disorderly conduct and riot occurred following a fight.

The Junction City Blue Jay wrestling team finished third in the JCHS Invitational Saturday. Wichita Northwest captured the team title with 185 points followed by Wichita Heights with 161 and a half, and then Junction City with 145. In the individual weight class competition Kevin Perez finished first at 120 pounds and Andrew Millsap first at 138 pounds.

The Junction City Blue Jays won their third straight game as they defeated the Topeka West Chargers 78-68 at the Shenk Gym Friday night. For the Blue Jays it was their first home game since mid-December.

The Geary County Convention and Visitor's Bureau approved several funding recommendations Tuesday. Marketing funds for the C.L. Hoover Opera House in Junction City drew the biggest amount. The CVB has recommended approval for $65,000 with the potential of adding another $10,000 in the fourth quarter of 2012 pending the CVB's year-to-date income.

Preliminary reports from an autopsy show that 37-year-old Frank Kincaid, of Manhattan, died of natural causes as a result of internal organ failure at his home January 19. Riley County Police officials responded to the residence of Kincadi, a Fort Riley soldier, at 824 Ewing Drive last week for a report of an attempted burglary in progress.

Homicides Down

Homicides have fallen off the list of the nation's top causes of death. U.S. health officials say the murder rate fell enough in 2010 to knock it out of the top 15 causes of death. Junction City Police Chief Tim Brown said overall crime has been down 15% in Junction City the past two years.

A Fort Riley Soldier has been arrested in connection with the drive-by shooting in Manhattan early New Year's morning.  An investigation led by the Riley County Police Department in conjunction with the Junction City Police Department led to the arrest of 25-year-old Specialist Daniel Patrick Parker. Parker resides in Junction City.

Geary County Undersheriff Tony Wolf will run for Geary County Sheriff. The 38-year-old Wolf plans to file for election to the office Friday at the County Clerk's office. If elected, he would replace current sheriff, Jim Jensen. Wolf was recently promoted to undersheriff and said this has been a goal since he began working for the Sheriff's Department 16 years ago.

Wakefield woman killed in weekend car crash

A 42-year-old Wakefield woman was killed in an automobile accident early Saturday morning. The Clay County Sheriff's Department responded to a call at approximately 2:40 a.m. Saturday and pronounced Debra Auld-Bliss, of Wakefield, dead at the scene. Kemph dies from cement truck accident in Geary County

After suffering severe injuries from a cement truck accident in Geary County this week, 29-year old Travis Kemph, Newton, has died. A family member, David Miller, said Kemph was taken off life support early Friday morning after a team of doctors removed his organs to donate to others.

Fire causes total loss of home in Junction City

There were injuries in a fire Wednesday morning at 228 East 11th Street in Junction City. The Junction City Fire Department responded to a working structure fire at approximately 10:15 a.m. The fire was under control in 20 to 30 minutes. After an investigation, JCFD officials said the cause of the fire was believed to have been electrical.

The Geary County Sheriff's Department has arrested and booked 30-year-old Justin Johnson, Fort Riley, after he eluded deputies Wednesday afternoon. Johnson was clocked traveling 110 miles per hour on southbound US-77 at approximately 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. He then led deputies through Junction City.

Plans In Place for Little Apple New Year's Eve Celebration

Blood Drive Successful

The American red Cross blood drive in Junction City exceed the goal that had been set for the two-day drive. According to Red Cross officials 150 units of blood were donated, exceeding the goal of 140.

Recreation fees and visitation numbers were down for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Milford Lake in 2011. R.J. Harms, operations manager, said recreation fees were down around 40 percent and vistor numbers decreased about five percent. In 2011, the Corps received $112,000 in recreation fees.

Lieutenant Jordi D. Hester will retire from the Junction City Police Department on December 26. The JCPD made the announcement Wednesday. Hester departs with 25 years of service to the Junction City community. He was hired by the police department in September 1987.

It was a unanimous decision. The Junction City Commission denied the most recent proposal from Nash Finch for a five-year property tax abatement Tuesday night. The proposal was for essentially a five-year, 50 percent property tax abatement. It included 25 percent the first two years, 50 percent the third year and a 75 percent abatement for the final two years.

Fire Intentionally Set

Investigators have determined the fire that destroyed the Strasser Village apartment complex and damaged other nearby buildings in Manhattan was intentionally set. According to a news release investigators have determined the fire originated in the northern section of the apartment complex that was still under construction.

The Economic Development Commission is recommending denial of a property tax abatement extension for Nash Finch. According to EDC chairman Ben Kitchens, the proposal included a five year, 50 percent abatement. First Infantry Division Soldier Killed In Iraq

First Infantry Division officials are reporting a soldier from the division has died of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit in northern Iraq. Twenty-five year old First Lieutenant Dustin Vincent of Mesquite, Texas was killed by small arms fire while dismounted from his vehicle in northern Iraq's Kirkuk Province during a patrol November 3.

Dickinson County officials confirmed the discovery of 72-year-old Roy Conrad of Chapman on Tuesday. Conrad was found in a low lying area approximately 200 yards north of his residence. The Sheriff's Department said deputies responded to Conrad's home north of Chapman on Monday after a neighbor reported that he had not been seen for several days.

Bennett Inducted Into Hall of Fame


Former Junction City Blue Jay wrestling coach Ben Bennett has been inducted into the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He was inducted during a ceremony in Salina Saturday. Bennett guided the Blue Jays to three Class Six-a state wrestling titles and produced 27 individual state wrestling champions during his career at Junction City High School.

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said two men are charged with murdering a Junction City woman to keep her from telling police about a drug trafficking operation. The indictment was unsealed Monday in U.S. District Court in Topeka. Grissom joined Junction City Police Chief Tim Brown and Geary County Attorney Steve Opat at a press conference Monday to announce the unsealing of the indictment.

The First Infantry Division Public Affairs Office confirms approximately 220 soldiers from the Second Brigade Combat Team returned to the post from Iraq Sunday night. The next contingent of about 350 is due to return Wednesday.

Two JCHS Runners Qualify for State Cross Country


Jack Timmerman and Rosie Hollis have qualified for state cross country. Timmerman finished fourth in the Six-A regional meet with a time of 16:14.78. Hollis finished 16th in the girls regional in 16:22.09.

Lady Jay Volleyball Season Comes to End


The Junction City Lady Jay volleyball team fell to Wichita Heights in the first round of their Class Six-A substate volleyball tournament at Heights. Junction City won the first game 25-23 but then lost 25-18 and 25-21.

Baby Lisa Not Sighted In Manhattan


The Riley County Police Department received a report Tuesday that a child similar in appearance to the missing child known as "Baby Lisa" who was reportedly abducted in the Kansas City area may have been sighted in Manhattan. The RCPD conducted an investigation and confirmed the child seen was not the child missing from Kansas City.

La Fiesta signs lease in Junction City

A new mexican restaurant is expected to open in Junction City at the beginning of next year. La Fiesta owner Noe Lara confirmed with KJCK that the restaurant has signed a lease agreement with Fugate Enterprises, a Wichita-based company. The initial lease, signed September 23, is for five years with two additional five year options; a potential total of 15 years.

New JCHS Schedule Recommendation Not Yet Approved


There are questions that need to be answered before a new schedule can be put in place for next school year at Junction City High School. Members of the Interest Based Bargaining team hoped to finalize the plan for a recomended 90 minute modified block schedule when they met on Tuesday, but found there were unanswered questions.

Former longtime Junction City Resident Dr. Nedrick Price died last Friday at his home in Kansas City, MO. A memorial service will be held this Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Church in Junction City. The family will receive friends at the C.L. Hoover Opera House following the service.

The Junction City Blue Jays boys cross country team finished sixth in the JCHS Invitational Saturday at Milford State Park. Jack Timmerman led the Blue Jays with a fourth place finish in the individual competition in a time of 16:55.93.

Smoky Hill Brothers Win Barbecue Contest


The barbecue contest at Jammin In JC included eight contestants. The Smoky Hill Brothers entry captured the overall championship. They won the chcken and rib divisions, and finished second in pork barbecue.

Cats Move Into Rankings

Soldier Killed In Afghanistan


Fort Riley officials are confirming the death of a First Infantry Division soldier in southern Afghanistan. They have identified the soldier as Garrett Fant, 21, of American Canyon, California.

No Injuries In Bus - Pickup Truck Accident

Fort Riley Soldier Killed In Afghanistan


The 1st Infantry Division Public Affairs Office at Fort Riley is reporting a 1st Infantry Division soldier from the post has been killed by enemy forces while deployed to Afghanistan. Specialist Chazray Clark, 24, died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device on Sunday while on dismounted patrol in the Kandahar Province of southern Afghanistan.

Community leaders sign agency consolidation documents


The final document signing for agency consolidation was a sign of relief for Transitional Executive Board chairman Ben Bennett. Bennett headed the committee to place the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Commission, Geary County Convention and Visitor's Bureau and Military Affairs Council under one umbrella as a new Chamber of Commerce.

Hollis - Meadows Finish First


Junction City High School cross country runners Rosie Hollis and Cassidy Meadows won their respective races in the Topeka West Invitational. Hollis won the varsity girls race in 6:28.25 while Meadows finished first in the junior varsity girls race in 7:00.87.

Fall Classic Raises Funds


The Fall Classic raised $34,000 for The Surgery Center at Geary Community Hospital. Fort Riley Site of Nine-Eleven Ceremony

Dice run, cermony remembers 9/11 victims


Members of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association rode with purpose on Saturday.  Approximately 130 riders took part in the 2nd Annual Dice Run put on by the CVMA to honor the men and women who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Herington Loses Bud Peterson


The head football coach at Herington High School Bud Peterson, 61, has died. That information was provided by interim head football coach Pat Baalmann. 

Blue Jays and Manhattan Roll


Highland Park drove 87 yards for an early touchdown but Junction City rallied and went on to defeat the Scots 46-13 in Friday night football at Al Simpler Stadium. The only other touchdown scored by Highland Park came in the fourth quarter.

KDHE conducts more tests of Milford Lake


The Kansas Department of Health and Environment conducted another round of tests on Milford Lake Tuesday. The tests are to check the toxic blue-green algae levels that have caused several problems at the lake throughout the summer. R.J. Harms, Corps of Engineers Operations Manager, said they will have the results on Friday during a conference call with KDHE.

Agency consolidation's next step


Now that agency consolidation has been approved by the Junction City Commission, Geary County Commission and the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the final document must be signed. The document places the Economic Development Commission, the existing Chamber of Commerce, Covention and Visitor's Bureau and the Military Affairs Council under one umbrella of a new Chamber of Commerce.

Public forum on redistricting next week


The Congressional, Senate and House districts in Kansas will be looked next year and Geary County Commissioner Florence Whitebread wants public input on where Geary County and Junction City should fall on the map. Whitebread, along with Barbara Craft and City Clerk Tyler Ficken are hosting a public session to hear the public's ideas.

Harmony Kings to perform in Junction City


Joniece Pitts and other Junction City residents wanted to bring gospel concerts to Junction City. And that's what they did. The Harmony Kings from Topeka will perform at the Pentecostal Church on Saturday, September 17. The Pentecostal Church is located at 5th and Adams. Pitts said the concert begins at six p.m. and is free to the public.

Cell tower request goes back to MPC


After debating for nearly an hour Tuesday night, the Junction City Commission voted on a request for a special use permit. The permit calls to install a communications tower in the southeast corner of Highland Cemetary in Junction City. It was a topic the commission was familiar with, but they wanted to go make sure they had the right decision.

City Commission approves agency consolidation


There was no real dispute from the Junction City Commission Tuesday as they unanimously approved proposed agency consolidation five to zero. The City Commission was the last entity to vote on the approval. Earlier Tuesday, the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors approved the document 11 to one and the Geary County Commissioners two to one.

Lady Jay Volleyball Splits Two


The Junction City Lady Jay volleyball team defeated Highland Park but then fell to Topeka Seaman 25-17, 25-17 at the Shenk Gym Tuesday night. Junction City is now 3-2 on the season. Seaman also defeated Highland Park.

Authorities Investigate Discovery of a Body


Geary County Sheriff Jim Jensen confirms the body of a soldier was found Tuesday morning in the Kickapoo School Road area south of Junction City. The name of the man has not yet been released, but an autopsy was scheduled in Kansas City..

Fire Cause Undetermined


The cause of a fire approximately four and a half miles west of Junction City Tuesday morning is still undetermined. Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges said the cause has listed undetermined by the state fire marshall's office.

Fire Destroys Rural Shed


Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges is reporting fire destroyed a shed or barn at a rural residence about four and a half miles west of Junction City. It was the residence of a sheriff's deputy.

Fire Causes Damage


There were no injuries but fire caused an estimated $30,000 damage to a single family house at 717 West 14th in Junction City Thursday afternoon. Soldier Killed In Standoff


A standoff at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Abilene has left a Fort RIley soldier, sergeant Kirk Evenson dead. The First Infantry Division Public Affairs Officer Lieutenant Colonel Sophie Gainey said Evenson was fleeing from military justice.

MAC Authorizes Funding for State Council


The Military Affairs Council in Junction City has authorized a $10,000 expenditure to support the Governor's Military Council. Area communities are providing money to help make up a $100,000 reduction in state funding.

JCHS Soccer Team Falls


The Junction City Blue Jay boys soccer team dropped their season opener to Emporia Tuesday night 6-1. The Blue Jays jumped ahead 1-0 in match before losing. 

Bollman Going Part-time


Geary Community Hospital general surgeon Dr. Charles Bollman will change from fulltime to part-time status in January. Hospital officials said Bollman intends to remain on the medical staff, flying back and forth from his home in Florida. Bollman has been employed at Geary Community Hospital for 37 years.

Gracia Burnham shares life-changing story with local community


Gracia Burnham survived one year of captivity by an Islamic Seperatist and Terrorist group in the Phillipines. They were kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf in 2001. She and her husband, Martin, were American Protestant Missionaries when they were captured and the Phillipine Army rescued Gracia in 2002. Martin was killed during the rescue attempt. Gracia was in Junction City over the weekend

Recent study could be useful for CVB


The recent study of three federal reservois in Kansas could be a tool for the Geary County Convention and Visitor's Bureau. Rick Dykstra, CVB assistant director, said they will probably use statistical data from the report in future publications as well as look at the overall report to strengthen weak points in the study.

Local meetings to be held on future district boundaries


There will be an effort to gather public input on the future boundaries for Kansas Senate, House and Congressional districts. Geary County Commissioner Florence Whitebread is teaming with former Kansas house member Barbara Craft and City Clerk Tyler Ficken to arrange a public meeting. This will be separate from those being held around the state.

JCHS Teams Scrimmage


The Junction City Blue Jay football and Lady Jay volleyball teams competed in front of an audience Friday night during their Blue - White scrimmages. Football coach Randall Zimmerman kept the show simple running only a limited number of plays with his varsity.

Another warning at Milford Lake


Milford Lake has been placed back under a warning for toxic blue-green alge. This marks the third time this summer the lake has been upgraded to warning status. R.J. Harms, Corps of Engineers operations manager, said it will extend through the Labor Day weekend. The warning means no contact with the water will be allowed, such as swimming or jet skiing. However, boating and fishing are allowed.

Gracia Burnham to speak this weekend


After being held hostage in the Phillipines for over a year, Gracia Burnham lived to tell her story. On Saturday and Sunday, she will be in Junction City. Burnham will speak three times during the two days at the Junction City Church of the Nazerene.

Motivational speaker returns to JCHS


When motivational speaker Jeff Yalden spoke at Junction City High School in January, he was full of stories and fun for the students. This year, Yalden said he wanted to be more real. Yalden spoke Friday afternoon to over 1,700 students and teachers in Shenk Gynasium.

Officers Elected for Regional Council


The Flint Hills Regional Council has elected a new slate of officers for the year. Executive Director Ty Warner said Vern Hay of Morris County will serve as the council president, and Jim Sherow of Manhattan will be the vice president.

Helping Paw for CJ 2011 is the theme for the annual benefit run sponsored by the Junction City firefighting association local 3309. The run along the Riverwalk Trial will benefit Charles J. Newman who will turn eight years old in September.

United Way Campaign Kicks Off


The goal for the 2011 United Way fundraising campaign in Junction City and Geary County has been set at $210,000. The campaign kicked off with a breakfast at the convention center on Monday.

JCPD Reports Big Marijuana Bust


Junction City Police Chief Tim Brown has estimated the street value of marijuana seized in a stop Thursday at approximately $750,000. Three out of state residents were arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to sell.

MDA Fundraiser


City Cycle Sales and the Junction City Harley Owners Group will sponsor an MDA fundraiser Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday activities at City Cycle Sales will range from bike games to face painting.

K-State Football Kickoff


The K-State Football Kickoff is Saturday at 5 p.m. at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The gates to the west side of the stadium will open at 5 p.m. for the final hour of practice.

Aging Well looking to build


The non-profit organizaiton Aging Well is wanting to add a senior living campus in Junction City.  After an independent market study completed last year, Aging Well's John Grace said there is a need for another facility. Grace adds the campus would have a positive economic and social impact in Junction City and Geary County.

NCAA Assures K-State


The NCAA staff has informed Kansas State University they have no concerns about the eligibility of Arthur Brown and Bryce Brown to compete at K-State. KSU officials released a statement Wednesday saying Kansas State University has been in communication with the NCAA.

Junction City Site of Blood Drive


The American Red Cross is sponsoring a blood drive at the Junction City Municipal Building Thursday and Friday. The hours Thursday will be 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Police Arrest Two Men In Beating Death Case


Riley County Police have two men in custody in the beating death of Kevin Cockrum, 31, of Manhattan. Authorities are reporting the arrest of Justin Charles Taylor, 24, of Manhattan  on suspicion of second degree murder, and Levertis Lee Horne, 20, of Manhattan on suspicion of aiding second degree murder.

City Approves Budget


The Junction City Commission has adopted a 2012 city budget. It includes a 2.068 increase in the property tax levy. The vote on the spending plan was 4-1 with commissioner Jack Taylor voting no.

Festival Cancelled


Milford State Park Manager Tony Reitz confirms the Extreme Outdoor Water Festival that had been scheduled at the south boat ramp at the state park this coming Saturday has been cancelled.

Warrior Zone To Serve Fort Riley Soldiers


The new Warrior Zone for soldiers at Fort Riley will feature 68 computers for general use, 16 XBOX 360s with Kinect, 16 playstation 3s with Move with each console hooked up to a 55 inch flat screen tv, 30 additional televisions, four pool tables, three poker tables, a snack bar, full bar with beer, and a theater with 20 recliners. 

Lewis Has First Appearance


The man accused in a weekend shooting in Junction City had a first court appearance Tuesday. The county attorney's office confirms status and preliminary hearings for Nathaniel Lewis Jr., 19, were scheduled in Geary County District August 23.

Victory Honors Ceremony welcomes Funk, MacWillie


The two newest Deputy Commanding Generals were welcomed to the Big Red One Monday afternoon. The Victory Honors Ceremony outside the First Division Headquarters was the official introduction to Brigadier General Paul Funk and Brigadier General Donald MacWillie.

Gracia Burnham to speak at JC Naz


Gracia Burnham will be in Junction City on Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28. Burnham will speak to members of the community and to the Junction City Church of the Nazerene congregation. Burnham was kidnapped and held captive in the Phillipines for over a year before being rescued in 2002. She will share her story and message during the two days.

Victory With Honors Ceremony On Schedule


A Victory With Honors ceremony is scheduled Monday at Fort Riley to recognize the arrival of Brigadier General Paul Funk and Brigadier General Donald MacWillie, incoming 1st Infantry Division deputy commanding generals for maneuver and support respectively. The ceremony is scheduled on the parade field outside the 1st Infantry Division headquarters at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Football Kickoff Event Set


The K-State Football Kickoff sponsored by the K-State Federal Credit Union is scheduled next Saturday, August 20, at 5 p.m. at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

School Set to Begin In USD 475


Classes begin Monday for the majority of students in USD 475. All students are required to report on Tuesday.

JCPD Reports Shooting


Police are reporting the shooting death of 24 year old Jennifer Pigg of Junction City early Sunday morning. Police said they responded at 1:18 a.m. to 1454 North Calhoun #7 in reference to a woman suffering from a gunshot wound.

Moran volunteers for USO on Fort Riley


Kansas Senator Jerry Moran and his wife, Robba, volunteered at the "No Dough Dinner" on Fort Riley Friday evening. The local United Service Organization's "No Dough Dinner" is a free meal just before each pay day and serves up to 250 soldiers and families and the Moran's helped serve the food.

Flint Hills Discovery Center on track


The construction for the Flint Hills Discovery Center is on schedule for the facility to open in April 2012. Director Bob Workman also said construction for the $24.5 million project is under budget. The Flint Hills Discovery Center is a product of star bonds awarded to the City of Manhattan by the state.

Kuhlman Retiring


The CEO of Kansas State University Salina Dennis Kuhlman is retiring. He plans to retire June 30, 2012.

BOE Approves Pay Hikes


The USD 475 Board of Education has voted to authorize 1.9% pay increases for administrative and classified employees.That's approximately the same amount of an average teacher raise for the coming school year.

Milford Lake Status Upgraded


Milford Lake has been upgraded from a warning to an advisory status for toxic blue green algae. Corps of Engineers Project Manager R. J. Harms confirms test results from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment came back Thursday, allowing for the upgrade for the entire lake.

BOE Ratifies Contract


THe USD 475 Board of Education has ratified the 2011-2012 teaching contract. The vote was 5-1 in favor of the contract, which was ratified earlier this week by teachers in the school district.

Chapman Voters Approve Sales Tax


A new one cent sales tax for the city of Chapman has been approved by voters. The vote on Tuesday was 111-30 in favor of the proposal.

Manhattan Teenager Killed In Accident


Riley County police confirm a Manhattan teenager Brett Bolton has died of injuries suffered in a single vehicle rollover accident in the 2400 block of Marlatt Avenue in Manhattan Friday night.

USD 475 School in TLC Show


Franklin Elementary School in Junction City will make an appearance on the TLC show "Surprise Homecoming" Monday evening at 9 p.m. The show filmed this past spring at Franklin Elementary captured a surprise homecoming of one of the school's fourth graders and her father who had been stationed in Iraq.

More School Supplies Collected


Apporoximately 20 boxes of school supplies for needy children in Geary USD 475 were collected during the Stuff the Bus campaign donation day on Saturday in the parking lot at Wal Mart.  It was the third consecutive Saturday donations had been accepted from the public.

Fallen Officer Remembered


December 4

Wilson Alex Johnson was shot and killed while responding to a domestic call December 3, 2001. Johnson had worked for the Junction City Police Department for 18 years at the time of his death.

Junction City Basketball Teams Fall

The Junction City Blue Jays and Lady Jay basketball teams both dropped their opening games of the season. In the boys contest Lawrence broke open a close game early in the third quarter and rolled to a 59-42 win over Junction City.
